Tuesday, February 28, 2006PrioritiesI read dooce.com daily. For those of you who don't know it, it's a blog written by a mom, named Heather, who lives in Utah and her and her husband are both Stay at Home Parents. Their Blogs pay for their bills. Nice set up, but not all that practical for most of us. Today was the first time she opened up comments on her blog in a real long time. Mostly because she has thousands of readers, and its hard to manage. The topic was "what law professor Linda Hirshman recently said on Good Morning America about how is a mistake for educated women to stay at home with their kids." She wanted to know what our mothers did, what we are doing, and what we want for our children. My mother and I recently talked about this, so I went and commented on how my mother stayed home with me till I was 2, and then opened the store with my father. I stayed with my grandparents periodicalcly, went to work with her sometimes, and went to preschool for 9 hours a week....which is NOTHING by today's standards. I remember thinking when I was little that she was abandoning me and going to work. Imagine....9 hours a week and a few visits to grandmas and I thought she was abandoning me! I leave Althea at her house for 8 hours a day. I went on to read some of the 1000+ comments and one really hit home. She said (and I hope it's ok to put her words here, but lets face it, who really reads my bog that will care?) "I agree that it's a crime when someone wants to stay home with their kids, and can't. However, I really think that, generally speaking, this is only true for single moms. I believe that any family willing to make serious sacrifices can have a stay-at-home parent. People of today say "we HAVE to have two incomes", but two incomes are only necessary to pay for their current standard of living. My husband and I made some huge cuts to our standard of living to allow for me to stay home. (We don't travel twice a year anymore, I've become Queen of eBay, I don't have a cell phone, or *GASP* satellite TV!...There will be a time when TV, cell phones, travel, and a bigger house might take priority again, and that's when my kids will all be in school, and I'll feel more comfortable (and probably be well-ready) to return to work." Wow. I go around saying that I wish I was able to stay home, but then again I live with niceties that I could probably live without. I am comfortable leaving Allie with my parents. I know she has a ball and so do they, but it kills me to walk out that door every morning. I don't really remember my childhood that well, and definitely don't remember anything prior to Kindergarden. I know that I don't want Althea to be a latch key kid, and come home to an empty house. Or be forced to stay at school till 5pm when I can get home from work to pick her up. I want to be home doing homework and talking to her about how her day went, and teaching her life lessons. Mainly, I don't want to have to put pressure on my husband to be the sole breadwinner. That is a lot of stress to deal with, and wouldn't want to have to deal with it myself either. So I guess for the next year or two my/our job is to figure out how to make this possible......without stress....or with as little stress as possible. Sunday, February 26, 2006Cute as two buttons...Jaime & Gia came by for a play date the other day. !! ![]() The girls were so cute together, they just kept looking at each other and grabbing at each other like - wow look, she's small like me! ![]() I wonder now, after watching them spend the day together if they understand each other! ![]() All day they spoke baby talk to each other. One would babble something the other would answer, then they would giggle about it. ![]() Then they would look at us like...HA! they don't get it!! tee hee Tuesday, February 21, 2006The Questions of the Day!~Has your baby done something strange yet where it made you think "What are you doing?" Althea grunts & screams! Not sure sometimes if she is attempting to tell me something or she just likes the sound. I was told my father as a child used to scream just to hear himself scream.....I guess it's in the genes.....THANKS DAD!!! ~What is your babies favorite toy? It used to by Lilly (Leapfrog) she sings the 1 to 10 song. "Hi, I'm Lilly...sing a counting song with me!!" I have nightmares about that doll. She has moved on now to a crinkly book. THANK GOODNESS!!! ~Does your baby prefer to stand or sit? She loves to stand...and sitting is ok...but laying down is a NO NO!!! You try to lay her back even to give her a bottle, she *gives you the elbow* (puts her elbow down into stomach to prevent you from laying her down). Of course, we are bigger than her....*evil laugh* ~Have you had any worries about your babies development? Do you think they are developing on time slow or ahead? I think EVERY mom worries about their baby's development. You read these books, and they say that month 3 week 2, your baby should be able to do a mini pushup. OMG SHE CAN'T DO THAT!!!! AHHHH CALL THE DOCTOR!!!!! ~Are your babies eyes and hair changing or staying the same? I can't believe that Althea's eyes are still blue. Everyone is shocked. Truthfully I think they will eventually be brown. Or at the very least a darker hazel. Although at the moment they aren't changing all that much yet. ~What kind of baby do you have? Calm, Hyper, High Needs, Fussy, Shy? I think that she can be all of those things....depending on the day/hour/minute you catch her. My mother would beg to differ and say she's perfect.....but she's the grandmother...so OF COURSE she's perfect! ~Now that our pumpkins are getting older, they are starting to look like little boys and girls, not little newborns!!! Who do they resemble? She looks like both of us, although at first glance she looks like neither of us, and could possibly belong to the Irish couple next door! At second glance you realize she looks just like her daddy! Then if you REALLLLLLLY look hard you MAY see a bit of me in the nose/mouth area. Of all things, the poor kid gets my nose! What does YOUR little one do? Sunday, February 19, 2006But MOM, I can't put my arms down!!!Last week we got about 18 incheas of snow in one night!! Check out the flicr pics (on the right) for the full effect! Anyway, I decided that I was going to layer Allie up in as much layers as possible, throw the snow suit on her, and chuck her in the snow for a quick photo shoot! ![]() ![]() Thursday, February 16, 2006This is Absolutely HorrifyingThis is a site that keeps track of all sex offenders. [http://www12.familywatchdog.us/] It's INSANE how many of them there are all over the place. There are pictures and addresses and everything!! It turns my stomach. Most of them look like horrible dirty old men. You put your address in, and it will give you a map of your house, and then little colored squares showing where they live. There are 4 in my map. Closest one is about 5 miles away. I FREAKED!!! Then I started putting in other addresses, and they are EVERYWHERE!!! Holy Sh*t!!!!! Wednesday, February 15, 2006Doctor AppointmentHappy Belated Valentine's Day to everyone!! So, Monday I brought Althea to her 4 month check up. She weighs 15lbs 6 oz and is 25.8 inches long! 90th Percentile in both areas, and I have the shoulder pain to prove it! I'm starting her on cereal now two times a day, which means that "grandma" now has to feed her cereal when she gets there. Allie is a pro at it already of course (did you expect anything less? lol) she doesn't even make that much of a mess truthfully. I can also start her on some Stage One fruit....don't worry pictures to come! lol She got her second round of shots......poor thing......screamed bloody murder. She actually likes the nurse when we first get there and smiles at her and everything.....then after the shots and I pick her back up and she stops crying she just looks at her with little tears in her eyes like, "Why? Why did you do that? =o( I thought you were nice!!" I'm sure she will hate me one day for telling the "internet" this, but she has a bit of a flat spot on the back of her head. I asked the doctor about it, and his response? "yea....she sure does!" *rolls eyes* great, thanks doc!!! Anyway, it's completely cosmetic.....so nothing to really worry about, unless I'm that neurotic of a mother. So the question is......am I that neurotic of a mother? *shrug* not sure yet. I'm assuming that once she starts rolling around and not always laying on her back it will get better. Plus, she'll have hair to cover it, no? Will she one day when she turns 13 say to me. WHY didn't you fix my flat spot!!! I look horrible!! *runs up to room and slams door* (you know how dramatic 13 year old girls can be.) I guess we'll see!! Friday, February 10, 2006Annoying is..........when the person who sits in the cubical across the walkway from you decides that 10:30 am is time to turn around and cut his fingernails into his garbage...... ...ewwwww..... for 5 minutes.....*clip* *clip* *clip* *clip* *clip* *clip* I keep waiting for peices to come flying over the wall.... I swear if he grabs that clipper and takes his socks off, I'm gonna hurl! Tuesday, February 07, 2006I'm a whole 4 months, now give me food!!!Allie is 4 months today!!! WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE?!?!?!? She's sooo big!!! ![]() She must realize that she's 4 months cause she's been sleeping through the night for over a month and a half, and all of a sudden the last week she started to get up early, 4:30 5:00 am! She's hungry and wants that food!! The doctor says we can start food at 4 months. (Even though I cheated and gave her a bit early.) Well three nights ago I fed her cereal again. Two nights in a row, and she slept like a log...and woke up happy. But she got a bit of consitpation =\ so I felt bad and didn't feed her last night...she woke up early again....*sigh* We don't have a doctor's appointment till next week. I know I'm lucky she sleeps as long as she does....(which is still 8.5 to 9 hours) and shouldn't be greedy.....but I got used to my full night sleep!! Full nights sleep means she gets up 6am or later! So I'm calling the doctor today. Maybe I can give her something different. OK OK enough about poop.....that happens....(yes poop happens!!) when you become a mom, you feel as if it's normal to talk about poop! Isn't it? ![]() She is still very smiley...and actually chuckles at us....which is totally adorable. She does, however, have a little attitude! Could she possibly BE my child without having even a small attitude? I think NOT, and I'm proud of it!! Woman NEED attitudes...so it's about time it showed up! She yells at her toys if they don't do what she wants. ![]() As if to say: Now you get down here where I can grab you RIGHT NOW!!!!! She doesn't really cry as much as she yells at you. LOL In fact she LIKES to hear herself scream. When she's hungry...she doesn't cry like "oh mom....I'm so hungy...please get me a bottle" her eyebrows go down and she looks at me and yells "go and get me a bottle, woman!!!" tee he...too funny! ![]() As much as she yells, she laughs and smiles 100 times as much. It just melts your heart. In the morning when you go and get her from the crib, as soon as she sees you this huge smile comes across her face and she gets all excited.....it's like no other feeling. I'm starting to understand what my mother felt. I sometimes think about things that I did as a kid, and gasp to think of her doing even the smallest of them! Dating? Drinking? Parties? LOCK HER UP IN THE ATTIC....SHE'S NOT ALLOWED OUT EVER!!!! How did my mother do it? I guess one day at a time.....I have a bit of time before I have to worry.....*deep breaths* ![]() Her cheeks couldn't possibly get any bigger!!! I remember how that felt...mine didn't go away till I hit 16!! She still hates her tummy time. She wants NOTHING to do with being on her stomach. Which I will be bringing up to the doctor....I know it's probably nothing...but it will make me feel better.... I think maybe she might be starting to look a little like me....maybe..... ![]() P.S. I'M WEARING PRE-PREGNANCY PANTS TODAY!!!! Not back to pre-pregnancy weight yet....they used to be big, and now their tight....BUT STILL!!!!! Sunday, February 05, 2006Fun with Shampoo![]() ![]() |
